to\u00a0<strong>Potsdam<\/strong>\u00a0with the\u00a0<strong>Sanssouci Palace<\/strong>, the summer spot of the Prussian king <strong>Frederick the Great (18th century, Hohenzollern dynasty<\/strong>). I wanted to visit it, but it is closed on Mondays. An indigestion due to the bombastic <strong>Rococo<\/strong> I was spared.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the separate <strong>Bildergalerie<\/strong> around the corner would work from <strong>Caravaggio<\/strong>, <strong>Rubens<\/strong> and V<strong>an Dyck<\/strong> hang. All that water splashing caused an awkward urge to pee after a while, but everything here was closed. Fortunately, the toilets at the even more pompous\u00a0<strong>Neues Palais<\/strong>, 1.5 km further through the park, did open. The palace too, by the way, but only with a guided tour. I don't understand enough German for that and I can't remember all those royal stories and dates anyway.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-287973c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"287973c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Russian colony and Dutch quarter<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f36da6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f36da6f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From this spot it was 3.5 km of cycling to the\u00a0<strong>Alexandrovka Russian Colony<\/strong>. 'Colony' conjured up an image of a rather compact settlement for me, but it was anything but that. The colony is located in a <strong>large oval garden<\/strong> with fruit orchards, crossed by two paths with two wooden houses facing each other at wide intervals.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <strong>King Frederick William III (1770-1840)<\/strong> which there are in total <strong>13 such homes<\/strong> had it built to commemorate his friendship with Russian Tsar Alexander I.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half a kilometre past Alexandrovska on a hill stands a pink\u00a0<strong>Russian Orthodox Church<\/strong>. Outside hung an appeal by diocesan archbishop Tichon von Rusa against the war and for peace. Photography inside was not allowed, a Russian woman told me after hearing my shutter click once.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From here it was only 1,500 metres downhill to the\u00a0<strong>Dutch district<\/strong>, which midway through the <strong>18th century<\/strong> was built by Dutch craftsmen and consists of <strong>150 brick houses with typical Dutch facades<\/strong>. It struck me as rather artificial and hilarious. Currently, you'll find lots of eateries, cafes and boutiques. Pretty cosy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d469a83 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"d469a83\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/reachoutforacause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Russische-kolonie.webp\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-2012\" alt=\"Russische kolonie\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reachoutforacause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Russische-kolonie.webp 800w, https:\/\/reachoutforacause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Russische-kolonie-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/reachoutforacause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Russische-kolonie-768x576.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-55a1f07 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"55a1f07\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>Russian colony<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7561cb4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7561cb4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Centre and Barberini museum<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ddb56c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7ddb56c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By now the afternoon was well underway and one more stop awaited me: the Alte Markt with the\u00a0<strong>Evangelische St-Nikolai Kirche<\/strong>\u00a0(1837, destroyed in 1945 and reopened in 1981), and my actual goal: the\u00a0<strong>Barberini Museum<\/strong>, featuring an exhibition of paintings by <strong>Modigliani<\/strong> and the permanent collection of industrialist Hasso Plattner, which consists of 110 impressionist works, including <strong>38 Monets<\/strong>.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0<strong>Glienicke-Brucke<\/strong>, known worldwide since the spy blockbuster '<strong>Bridge of Spies<\/strong>' starring Tom Hanks, I left for the next day. On my way to Berlin, I would pass it after about ten kilometres anyway. That bridge not only represents the <strong>border between Berlin and Potsdam<\/strong>, <strong>but also between eastern and western Europe until 10 November 1989.<\/strong> She was also the scene of spy exchanges between the US and the Soviet Union.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to its many parks and gardens, Potsdam is a <strong>relaxed city to visit<\/strong>. The people there do not seem agitated at all and, despite the tourist high season, nowhere was it really crowded.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a5cff4 elementor-align-center elementor-widget elementor-widget-button\" data-id=\"7a5cff4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\"
