--e-global-typography-text-text-transform ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">Thursday evening I cycled up to the old town to soak up the atmosphere. The basilica had just closed, but the Gothic fa\u00e7ade was handsomely lit and provided a nicer photo than the shadow fa\u00e7ade the next morning. Ditto for the town hall with the pretty inlaid square in front of it.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">On Friday morning, I set off on my cycle tour of the palm park and the old town. A small diversions, but more than worth it. The basilica was now open. The lavish gold ornaments and statues with gilded crowns, jewels and lots of glitter were free to visit. However, they did not appeal to me much.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">A discovery - or again, not such a great discovery as it has since become a UNESCO world heritage site - was the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Jardin Huerto del Cura,<\/span>\u00a0a 12,000 m\u00b2 botanical palm garden with numerous palm species and other Mediterranean plants and cacti. A gem of a garden.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">The big eye-catcher is the '<span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">palmera imperial<\/span>', a mighty date palm with seven sub-tribes. It is 180 years old, weighs eight tonnes and stands 17 metres tall. In 1894, a certain chaplain Casta\u00f1o dedicated it to Empress Sissi of Austria, hence its imperial title.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-96d3b6c elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"96d3b6c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div
