margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">This morning, fortunately, I had no rain to cycle to town. I parked my bike at the central\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Plaza del Pilar<\/span>\u00a0and could immediately see the majestic\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Catedral-Basilica Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Pilar<\/span>\u00a0visits. The expressive series of etchings about the horrors - committed by both sides - of the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Spanish war of independence<\/span>\u00a0against the French (1808-1804, Joseph 1 Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon) grabs you right in the throat. For security reasons, that series was only published posthumously, in 1863.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">The critical-satirical series '<span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Los Capricho<\/span>'s' testifies to Goya's humanist ideals of enlightenment: He delivers unmistakable criticism of the prevailing Spanish reality: the impoverished and superstitious people heavily exploited by the parasitic nobility and clergy. The hypocrisy, corruption and fecklessness of those in power. The subordinate role of women. The heavy-handed upbringing and poor education of children.... This criticism was not received with gratitude and when the absolutist regime Ferdinand VII returned to power after the war, he retreated to 'la Quinta del Sordo' (the villa of the deaf). Goya had become deaf due to an illness.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">He later went into voluntary exile in France. He died in Bordeaux.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">Then I wandered around town some more, popping in here and there and photographing whatever caught my eye or caught my eye.<\/p><div><span style=\"color: #2c2c28; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fdf119e elementor-align-center elementor-widget elementor-widget-button\" data-id=\"fdf119e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\"
