A few more photos and <strong>musings at (London)Derry.<\/strong> Revisiting the pictures, I realised that in Derry, many of the storylines I followed during my trip from southern to northern Ireland converge.<\/span><\/p><ul><li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; letter-spacing: normal;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">Demographics<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">: Driving into the city, I passed, at the spot where the jetty for transatlantic shipping used to be, a monument recalling the\u00a0<b>Irish diaspora<\/b>. A family with three young children leaves, grandma and grandpa are left orphaned on the quay. The\u00a0<b>Titanic story<\/b>\u2026<\/span><\/li><li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; letter-spacing: normal;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">Politics<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">: At the <strong>Free Derry Museum<\/strong> the storyline of the Irish <strong>independence struggle<\/strong> against the English, the subsequent civil war (cf. the story about the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/reachoutforacause.org\/en\/cycling-for-bubaque-2019-ierland-killavullen-kilrush-via-valentia-island-skelligs\/\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #00285e; text-decoration: underline;\">Ballyseedy Memorial<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">) and finally the Troubles in Northern Ireland. At the museum, I also met volunteer staff member\u00a0<b>Jimmy Toye<\/b>\u00a0which the <strong>Battle of Bogside<\/strong>' (1969) and had received a photo collage with one photo in which he himself was in it, following its 50th anniversary.<\/span><\/li><li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; letter-spacing: normal;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">Religion<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">: At the IOSAS Centre and\u00a0<b>Celtic Prayer Garden<\/b>\u00a0The religious narrative of the <strong>Pagan Celtic culture<\/strong> that the individuality of the Irish <strong>rural monastic Christianity<\/strong> determined against urban and hierarchically structured Roman Catholicism.<\/span><\/li><li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; letter-spacing: normal;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">Cycling perils<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">: While riding out of Derry, I came across two young boys who were struggling with a chain that had got stuck between the rear wheel without any repair equipment. Since I had (and will have) this repeatedly too, I have since <strong>chain-loosening expert by experience<\/strong> become and lent them a hand with my repair kit.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm; font-size: medium; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; letter-spacing: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm; font-size: medium; font-family: Aptos, sans-serif; caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; letter-spacing: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; color: #2c2c28;\">It was an eventful journey that <strong>became more emotionally intense the further north I went<\/strong>. I hope Scotland will return to calmer times from sometime next week, with only the normal concerns of the long-distance cyclist: plotting the route, making sure there is enough water and provisions, trying to stay dry, finding daily shelter, cycling hassles and, in my case, <strong>raising funds for Cipriano<\/strong> and find good wifi networks to 'serve' followers with stories and photos.<\/span><\/p><p>But I definitely want to go back to Ireland, it is a very special and warm country, although not in the climatic sense.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-287973c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"287973c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">18 July - Elaghvale - Ballintoy (89 km - 632 m climb)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1af3c78 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1af3c78\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today I did my last 30km through Ireland\/<strong>county Donegal<\/strong>\u00a0driven, until the\u00a0<strong>Foyle ferry<\/strong>\u00a0in Greencastle. Across the road is Northern Ireland\/county Derry.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cultural difference was immediately noticeable. Just beyond\u00a0<strong>Magilligan Point\u00a0<\/strong>I cycled for several kilometres next to the barbed wire of a <strong>prison<\/strong> with a prison wall within it that was surely a kilometre or so long. Nowhere in Ireland have I seen such a large prison<br \/>Village names are only in English. No more Irish. In the villages many\u00a0<strong>British flags<\/strong>. They probably stuck around after the 12 July Orange marches. <strong>No Irish crosses<\/strong> more on the\u00a0<strong>cemeteries<\/strong>. Much more expensive entrance fees for monuments. <strong>Churches are closed<\/strong>. In Ireland, I have often taken shelter or rest in churches, as there is almost nothing \"sitable\", not even a tree stump or so, next to the roadway. Fortunately, the people are still just as friendly.<\/p><p>Tomorrow and the day after, I will take two rest days and do some sightseeing here. The <b>Carrick-a-Rede<\/b> suspension bridge, the longest in the UK, the <strong>Bushmills Whiskey distillery\u00a0<\/strong>and the nature moment <strong>Giant's Causeway <\/strong>(main photo), with giant basalt columns, is also within cycling distance. De Carrick-a-Rede hangbrug ligt vlakbij mijn hostel, dus ik ging daar eerst een kijkje nemen. De omgeving is er mooi, maar 9\u00a3 betalen om over een hangbruggetje van 20 meter te wandelen en dan nog eens een paadje van 150 meter over een rots, heb ik niet gedaan. Vissers gingen vroeger over een hangbrug die maar \u00e9\u00e9n touw had om je aan vast te houden. Hun netten en ander materiaal moesten ze ook stuk per stuk overbrengen.
