landowners<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7d372af elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7d372af\" August:\u00a0<\/strong>During my drive from <strong>Dunbeath to Brora<\/strong> I passed the\u00a0<strong>ruins of Badbea<\/strong>, a former village right on the <strong>edge of cliffs<\/strong> where small tenant farmers (crofters) were forced to settle after the 'land clearances'.<\/p><\/div><div><p><strong>Large landowners<\/strong> established in the late 18th, early 19th century that <strong>large-scale sheep farming<\/strong> yielded more than leasing land to poor <strong>smallholders<\/strong>, and they <strong>chased away those 'paupers'<\/strong> from their cottages to the barren shores. When the distraught and disenfranchised tenants would not leave, their <strong>farms just burnt down.<\/strong><\/p><\/div><div><p>In Badbea lived <strong>from 1792 12 families<\/strong> and their cattle, right against the coastal edge on the inhospitable and quite barren cliffs. The large landowners had given them <strong>just short of being chased into the sea<\/strong>... It sometimes blew so hard there that adults had to leash their children and hens lest they be blown over the cliff edge....<\/p><\/div><div><p>Many decided to <strong>emigrate<\/strong>, including to Canada or Australia. By <strong>1903 Badbea was completely deserted<\/strong>. One of the sons of an emigrant returned to Scotland and built a\u00a0<strong>memorial tower<\/strong> for the former families of Badbea (main
