of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-style ); text-transform: var( --e-global-typography-text-text-transform ); font-weight: bolder;\">Bernissart<\/span><span style=\"font-style: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-style ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-transform: var( --e-global-typography-text-text-transform );\">\u00a0found 30 skeletons of iguanodons and numerous bones of prehistoric turtles, crocodiles and fish at a depth of 320 to 350 metres around the 1875s.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">The excavations took three years and those finds were considered so important that\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">engineer Louis De Pauw<\/span>\u00a0decided to take the skeletons to the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\"><a style=\"color: #00285e;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalsciences.be\/nl\/museum\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natural History Museum in Brussels<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>send.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">This was no mean feat, as the giant bones were very fragile. As soon as they came into contact with air, they began to crumble. Therefore, they were immediately covered with a double layer of protective paper and cast in plaster. Each skeleton was given a letter of the alphabet, and all the individual bones were numbered in the correct order A1, A2,..... Some of those replastered bones weighed up to 1 tonne!<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">Those blocks, 600 in total, were placed in wooden crates and transported to Brussels by horse-drawn cart. That operation required 37 transports. Upon unpacking, the bones were immediately impregnated with a strong glue to prevent them from falling apart.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">The entire undertaking, from discovery to research, shipping and reconstruction of the skeletons, took 25 years.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 1rem; font-family: 'Open Sans', serif; color: #2c2c28; font-size: 17.136px; letter-spacing: normal; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.8);\">An iguanodon was 10 metres long, 5 metres high and weighed 5 tonnes. Not a creature to keep in your backyard....<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-27f46db elementor-widget
