Chugging along at a leisurely pace on quiet French D-roads, hopefully leaving the Belgian traffic jams and roadworks behind me for a long time to come.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">At Vix, in the headwaters of the Seine, I spent the night in a spacious, quiet car park on the \u2018<b>Mont Lassois<\/b>\u2019, a hill rising to 300 metres with a 12th-century Romanesque chapel surrounded by a churchyard. That\u2019s one of the places I love to spend time.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Before sunset, I went for a short walk on Mont Lassois.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">In the Middle Ages, <b>Vix <\/b>and the hamlet on the hill was a stately site. There was also a small harbour for transferring goods onto flat-bottomed boats, as the draught of the Seine was insufficient here for larger vessels.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Apparently, the hill is also a launch site for paragliders. To avoid toll roads, Waze sometimes directed me along narrow, winding, single-lane tarmac roads. I\u2019m not too keen on that \u2013 it\u2019s hard to see oncoming traffic \u2013 but the scenery was absolutely stunning.<br \/><br \/><\/div><div dir=\"auto\">Spending the night in a car park near a cross-country skiing area, with an evening walk\/descent to the <b>Lac des Rousses<\/b>.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">On Sunday, I was at a campsite by a lake, the <b>Lake Corouge,<\/b> because, after three days of sweating and quick washes, I fancied a refreshing swim and a shower. I just managed to get in the water before a fierce thunderstorm broke out, bringing heavy downpours that lasted all evening. First, a monotonous stretch alongside the River Is\u00e8re on the D1006. A road with a lot of industry in the <strong>Is\u00e8re Valley<\/strong>. Then a 14-kilometre climb to the <strong>Col du Mont Cenis<\/strong> at 2,083 metres. The drop in temperature was really noticeable at this altitude: a wind chill of just 12 degrees, with a strong wind sweeping across the plateau. A jumper and a coat were needed \u2013 it was colder than in the valley.<\/div><div dir=\"auto\">When I got up in the morning <strong><span class=\"html-span xdj266r x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak xexx8yu xyri2b x18d9i69 x1c1uobl x1hl2dhg x16tdsg8 x1vvkbs\"><a class=\"x1i10hfl xjbqb8w x1ejq31n x18oe1m7 x1sy0etr xstzfhl x972fbf x10w94by x1qhh985 x14e42zd x9f619 x1ypdohk xt0psk2 x3ct3a4 xdj266r x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak xexx8yu xyri2b x18d9i69 x1c1uobl x16tdsg8 x1hl2dhg xggy1nq x1a2a7pz xkrqix3 x1sur9pj x1fey0fg x1s688f\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/park4night.com\/nl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span class=\"xt0psk2\"><span class=\"xjp7ctv\">park4night<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong> Whilst looking for possible places to stay overnight, I found an idyllic free car park on the banks of the <strong>Lake Mont Cenis<\/strong>, just past the pass. I could already picture myself bobbing about in the cool water at 25 degrees. But at 12 degrees and with a cold wind\u2026. <span class=\"html-span xexx8yu xyri2b x18d9i69 x1c1uobl x1hl2dhg x16tdsg8 x1vvkbs x3nfvp2 x1j61x8r x1fcty0u xdj266r xat24cr xm2jcoa x1mpyi22 xxymvpz xlup9mm x1kky2od\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"xz74otr x15mokao x1ga7v0g x16uus16 xbiv7yw\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/tf0\/1\/16\/1f976.png\" alt=\"\ud83e\udd76\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" \/><\/span><\/div><div dir=\"auto\">I didn\u2019t really fancy spending the whole evening in the car either, so I carried on down towards <strong>Bussoleno<\/strong>, which has a quiet, well-equipped motorhome site on the outskirts of the village for \u20ac4 a night. The temperature was a pleasant 25 degrees again.
