Around the Adriatic Sea 2026: Dubrovnik – Durrës (Albania) – Bari
The second leg of my cycle tour around the Adriatic Sea: the Balkan countries, probably as far as Dubrovnik in Croatia, perhaps even further…
Let’s stop standing by and watching all this suffering passively. The survival of Tibetan culture lies in the hands of the diaspora and their advocates, such as the International Campaign for Tibet.
China, which has been illegally occupying Tibet since 1950, is trying to completely 'sinicise' ethnic minorities with an identity other than the dominant Han culture. By the way, this is happening not only to the Tibetans, but also to the Uighurs in Xinjiang, the Mongols in Inner Mongolia and, since 2019, the Hong Kongers. And who knows, maybe Taiwan will follow...
Fundamental human rights are flagrantly flouted in those areas, while the international community (mostly) watches in silence. Probably the fact that China is by now well on its way to overtaking the United States as the world's largest economy is partly in between....
Since China's annexation in the 1950s, Tibetans have been systematically oppressed and discriminated against in their social, cultural, religious and political rights. All expressions of their Tibetan identity are construed as acts of separatism and punished as such, up to imprisonment and torture.
Some examples of this policy:
This severe repression for decades led in 2008 to new protests which were answered by China with killings and deprivation of liberty. Since then, more than 150 Tibetans committed suicide by self-immolation. Even those acts of desperation hardly make it into the Western media.

On my travels, I meet so many friendly, helpful and hospitable people.
They deserve a hall of fame.
