The war story of Kjell & Tove from Alta

Kjell en Tove

Fleeing WWII

When we were still in the morning in Alta were and were camping on a rocky beach near a residential area on the Altafjord, a car parked there with a elderly man and two ladies. They looked around the beach for a while and as they made their way back to their car, the man nodded, Kjell Roger Bolstad, had a chat with us. He had seen that we had a Belgian number plate and was once in Brussels been. A relative of his worked at a research centre in Delft, and from there Kjell visited several European cities.

Kjell was in 1939 bornn in the municipality of Alta on the Altafjord. His grandparents lived in Alta and his grandfather, a whale and seal hunter, taught him to swim at this little beach. There were then 2 houses in this neighbourhood, which is now completely built up, including Kjell's grandparent's house.

In 1944, the Russians drove the Germans into Norway, and these left in the province Finnmark a trail of destruction after. That is why Alta was resurrected after the war as a ultramodern city.

50,000 Norwegians fled the scene to the south. The whole of Alta was burnt down. Kjell and his family also spent 3 years on the run.

After the war, Kjell went to study in southern Norway and settled in Bergen. He was now back in his native region with his two sisters for a school reunion and insisted on visiting this little beach where his grandfather taught him to swim.
