17-18-19 Dec: Tabernas desert and Sierra Alhamilla
Saturday we drove from Los Coloraos above Gorafe to Tabernas. Near the village of Tabernas - again with a closed visitor centre - is 'Texas-Hollywood - Fort Bravo', a staged Western village where films by Sergio Leone and others were shot. Blockbusters such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Indiana Jones and Zorro.
The 'Saloon' and 'Main Street' hosted cowboy shows. Behind the village is a campsite. As we arrived late on Sunday, we stayed there for two nights. I also took a bike ride there to a higher vantage point over the Tabernas region.
On Tuesday, we drove to another location. On the way, we passed the picturesque mountain village of Baños De Sierra Alhamilla. We spent the night a lot lower down - after a hair-raising descent down a steep gravel road - at the ruins of an Arab film village. Scenes from Lawrence of Arabia were supposedly shot here.
