Around the Adriatic Sea
The challenge: cycling round the Adriatic Sea. Will I manage it before the weather in the Balkans gets too rough? I’m curious to find out myself….
Before I went to Girona left, I visited in Figueres first the Teatre-Museu Salvador Dali. I thought it would not be super crowded now, but Dali is a big crowd puller and the museum still worked with time slots. The next admission was 11:45, an hour and 15-minute wait. 17€ is not cheap either, box office cash.
While waiting, I stepped into the Sant Pere de Figueres (1020) church inside. Dali is said to have been baptised in this church. Soft Gregorian music was playing and I strolled around the church at my thousand paces.
Behind the altar was a stern statue of St Peter.
An understated series of oil paintings about The vocation of San Benito of one Begoña Ramos (1961) caught my attention. I photographed them all.

Then it was time for Dali. A long queue was already lining up for the 11:45 time slot. So in the first halls, it was over the heads. For the first time this tour, I found it necessary to put on my mouthpiece. That was long overdue.
Because of the crowds and shuffling to view a work, I didn't really enjoy this exhibition. There were also a lot of those special effects with mirrors and peepholes which I don't like much anyway. Dali's work is sufficiently familiar to me. When there were too many people, did not make too much effort to get to it. At 'Aliyah', a series of watercolours about the Holocaust from 1968, I lingered a bit longer.
The Dali Theatre Museum is worth a visit, it is a 'must see' in this city but, as I wrote earlier, I actually enjoy more unexpected works of art or monuments that I happen to come across along the way and that touch me. Like today's series of paintings by Begoña Ramos.
