Spain 2024: Bardenas Reales de Navarra

 27 butt ’24 - My plan was to go to the Bardenas Reales badlands in Navarre and explore the area's three different zones by bike. By car, you are only allowed in La Blanca Baja (the low white Bardena), which covers only about one-tenth of the total area (41,845 ha).

Due to the predicted rain, I blew off this plan and only did the convenience round trip by car today on Wednesday. For the other zones, I will have to return again....

I drove through a landscape with impressive rock formations which formed about 20 million years ago as rivers from three flanking mountain ranges (Pyrenees, Iberian Cordillera and Cordillera Costero-Catalana) deposited a thick layer of sediment in the lower 'bowl'. Then erosion by rain and wind sculpted the present jagged landscape.

Impressive, although there were more stretches of farmland in between than I expected in a semi-desert.

This was my last activity in Spain. Then I set sail for home. Through the rain....
