6 September: evening walk in Rimini

Through a park alongside the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre, then on past the ‘Domus del Chirurgo (2nd century AD) to the The Bridges of Tiberius and Augustus, which was completely wrapped up. On the other side of the Tiber was a pond with pleasure boats and a large square where a festival themed ‘The Return of Buffalo Bill’ was taking place. Again, with the usual loud music.
 
Back along the Fellini Museum. Tomorrow, Monday, is their closing day, so I’ll have to give it a miss.
Via Piazza Cavour, with a statue of Pope Paul V, I made my way back to my hotel, stopping off on the way for a salad in a cosy little restaurant.
 
A relaxing evening, and it was nice to go for a bit of a walk again.

8–9 September: a flying visit to Ravenna.

The Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna’s various basilicas and mausoleums are breathtakingly beautiful. I was already completely blown away in the Basilica and Sanctuary of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, 5 km south of the town, which, fortunately, was on my route. There was such a serene atmosphere in the church. I could have sat there quietly for hours, just enjoying it. You can never get enough of the mosaics either. But I had to carry on….
 
In Ravenna, I bought a combined ticket for five sites (€14.50 – which wasn’t too bad):
1) Mausoleum of Gallia Placida
2) Basilica of San Vitale
3) Neonian Baptistery
4) Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo
5) The Archiepiscopal Museum and the Chapel of St Andrew
 
Words aren’t enough; I’ll let the photos speak for themselves. And they’re just photos, after all. You really have to see it with your own eyes. And of course there are plenty more beautiful sights in the city; I had to be selective.
