The earliest mention of the chapel dates from 1457. Over the next few centuries, it was repeatedly destroyed by religious upheavals and war, but was restored each time.
Around the chapel is a circumambulation with 15 chapels, donated in the 18th century by someone who experienced a miraculous healing there. The original chapels were destroyed during the French Revolution and restored again in the 19th century. There is also a Marian grotto where believers come to burn coloured candles.
